Protecting the Reefs
We Love to Dive

The Red Sea is one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet. We have a responsibility — and a privilege — to protect it.

More Than a Dive Operator

Every trip we run, every course we teach, is an opportunity to do more than just dive — it's a chance to actively contribute to the health of the ocean. We've built conservation into the DNA of Deco Divers.

Our two core programmes — shark research and education, and coral reef restoration — are led by our own team and run year-round. Whether you're on a liveaboard with us or a day tripper, you can take part. No experience necessary. Just a desire to give something back.

Two Focuses. One Mission.

We concentrate our efforts where the Red Sea needs it most — the apex predators that keep the ecosystem balanced, and the coral that gives it life.

Oceanic whitetip shark in the Red Sea Shark Research

Shark Research & Education

The Red Sea is home to some of the world's most important shark populations — oceanic whitetips, hammerheads, grey reefs, threshers, and more. Yet sharks remain one of the most misunderstood and threatened groups of animals in the ocean.

Our shark programme has two goals: collecting behavioural data to contribute to ongoing research, and educating our divers to become genuine advocates for shark conservation.

  • Individual shark identification using fin-pattern photography
  • Encounter logs submitted to global citizen science databases
  • Onboard shark workshops on every liveaboard trip
  • Behaviour observation protocols — spotting stress signals and healthy interactions
  • Shark interaction guidelines for all guides and guests

Coral reef restoration in the Red Sea Coral Restoration

Coral Reef Restoration

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor yet support 25% of all marine life. The Red Sea's reefs are among the most resilient in the world — more heat-tolerant than most — but they still face serious threats from anchor damage, irresponsible diving, and climate change.

Our restoration work focuses on the reefs around Hurghada that we dive day in, day out. We grow coral fragments in underwater nurseries, transplant healthy colonies to damaged areas, and monitor reef health across our regular dive sites.

  • Coral nursery maintained at 8m depth — year-round growing
  • Fragment collection from naturally broken colonies (no wild harvesting)
  • Transplantation dives — guests can participate directly
  • Reef health surveys: coral cover, fish population, bleaching records
  • Mooring buoy installation to eliminate anchor damage at key sites

Every Dive Counts

You don't have to join a programme to make a difference. Every Deco Divers guest is briefed on responsible diving practices before entering the water — because the most powerful conservation tool is a well-informed diver.

No-Touch Policy

Hands off the reef, the marine life, and the seabed — always. We brief every diver before every dive.

Buoyancy First

Poor buoyancy is the single biggest cause of reef damage. We offer free buoyancy workshops to all guests.

Data Collection

Guests log marine life sightings on every dive. Your data goes directly into our research records.

Cleanup Dives

We run regular underwater cleanup dives as part of our trips. All guests on board are welcome to take part.

PADI AWARE Partner

PADI AWARE is the global non-profit dedicated to ocean conservation through diving. As a PADI dive centre, we offer the full suite of AWARE specialty courses — each one combining real-world skills with direct conservation action.

These aren't just courses. They're certifications that turn recreational divers into scientifically useful conservation contributors.
